American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar »

Located on the site of the historic Tredegar Gun Foundry in Richmond, VA, the American Civil War Center is the only facility in the country to tell the story of the Civil War from the Union, Confederate and African American perspectives. The center was incorporated in 2000 and opened its doors in 2006. The Richmond National Battlefield Park Center is also located within one of the buildings in the complex, which makes the attraction an ideal starting place for an east coast Civil War tour. The Wilburn Group has advised the Civil War Center by briefing management and board members on the role and responsibilities of the board. [close]

In 2010, the American Revolution Center secured a land exchange in the heart of historic Philadelphia. This enabled the Center to move forward with plans for a Museum of the American Revolution located steps from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. It also drafted a fundraising plan, including a case statement and list of donor prospects; provided counsel on the constitution of the Board of Directors; and prepared ARC principals for meetings with donor prospects. DC Cancer Consortium »

The DC region has one of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in the country. To address this issue, a number of healthcare, community service and volunteer organizations came together to provide better access to screenings and treatment, especially for those populations most at risk. A one-time grant from DC's share of the Tobacco Master Settlement Fund covered the consortium's organizational, program and operating costs for the first five years.

As the grant funding came to an end, the Wilburn Group provided counsel on expanding the consortium's outreach within the DC metropolitan area, and helped them build a board, broaden their base of support within the public and private sectors and diversify their funding sources to include public as well as private funding from corporations, foundations and individuals. Our team also assisted with the development of a fundraising plan, identification of donor prospects and completion of a case statement. [close]

Fort Erie/Niagara Parks Commission »

The War of 1812 struck hard in this area of Upper Canada. As the site of Canada's bloodiest battle, Old Fort Erie is an important destination for learning more about the War of 1812, the American Revolution, the Underground Railroad and other aspects of Canada's history. Working in partnership with PGAV Destinations, the Wilburn Group helped Niagara Parks to develop a vision for a new visitor center and exhibits to enhance the visitor experience. Our team also developed a fundraising plan that relied on public and private support. As a result of this visioning process, all necessary funds were raised, and the scale and scope of the project was expanded to better serve the park's visitors. [close]

Through programs at the community level, pilgrimages to the region, conferences, publications and special events, the HCEF is building a network of support for Christians in the Holy Land.

The Wilburn Group was retained to advise on the development of a proposed museum of Palestinian heritage and culture to be located in Bethlehem. Our counsel included the assessment of the purchase of a collection of more than 3,500 artifacts; identification and evaluation of several alternative sites for the museum; financial projections, including earned income and contributions; and the development of an audio-visual presentation for use with donor prospects. The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and the Adams County Historical Society have joined together to create a new museum in Gettysburg, PA. This new facility will promote a greater understanding of the Civil War events that took place on Seminary Ridge during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and their significance to the American experience, then and now. Over the last decade, the Seminary and Historical Society have developed a plan that will preserve the iconic 1832 Seminary building, give life to the stories that took place there during the pivotal battle and explore the social, moral and ethical aspects of war, compassion and peace.

The Wilburn Group has been retained to assist with the final stages of the fundraising effort and is offering counsel on programmatic components of the project, including an increased emphasis on aspects related to religion and the war. The American Heritage Society is managing the conversion of the American Heritage magazine to a national non-profit membership society for American history. Bob Wilburn currently serves as chairman of the board. The Society's rapidly expanding website includes the organization's own vast archival collection. Through a partnership with the American Association for State and Local History, this site also hosts the National Portal to Historic Collections, an online resource to the collections of a growing number of America's history museums and sites. The society also promotes historical scholarship and museum visitation initiatives. [close]

Carnegie Institute »

As President and CEO of the Carnegie Institute, Robert Wilburn played a key role in the evolution of Carnegie's four museums. To help found the Andy Warhol Museum, Dr. Wilburn negotiated the donation of the collection from the Dia Art Foundation and the Warhol Foundation, and oversaw the identification, acquisition and retrofit of the building that would house Warhol's work. He also helped direct the merger of the Buhl Science Center with the Carnegie Institute, which involved the building of a new $40 million structure to house the new Carnegie Science Center.

Dr. Wilburn was instrumental in the launch of the Carnegie 100—a group of community leaders who were invited to advise the Institute on its long-range plans and programs. This collaboration resulted in the involvement of a younger generation in programs and activities. The initiative has been copied by many other institutions as a way of increasing community interest and involvement.

Through a public-private partnership, Dr. Wilburn also worked with the City of Pittsburgh to rehabilitate its library system, helping to secure funds for the building or rehabilitation of a number of libraries.

Overall, Dr. Wilburn's fundraising initiatives at the Carnegie Institute resulted in more than $140 million in gifts, along with the Warhol collection, which is valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Membership in the museums tripled during his tenure, and each site saw a major increase in attendance. [close]

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation »

In Robert Wilburn's years as President and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the organization saw a significant turnaround. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Wilburn led the funding, design and opening of the Bruton Heights School Education Center; the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Library; and a state-of-the-art curatorial and conservation laboratory.

He guided Colonial Williamsburg into the 21st century by reaching into classrooms with live, interactive (and Emmy Award-winning) broadcasts. This effort reached millions of students in all 50 states. The Foundation's educational outreach initiatives also included a comprehensive— and very popular—website and intensive training materials for teachers. The Summer Teachers Institute grew from 30 participants to more than 500.

Dr. Wilburn also launched the first capital campaign in the Foundation's history—and it ultimately grew to $500 million. Under his tenure, the Foundation doubled its total number of donors and increased significantly the number of repeat donors. The Foundation also launched the first donor travel program, which attracted even more support. A new Good Neighbor Program increased community interest and involvement in programs and activities.

Within the 300-acre living history museum, a new focus was placed on the visitor experience, reversing a decline in attendance and finances through innovative and interactive on-site programming, award-winning marketing communications and ongoing comprehensive visitor research. [close]

Gettysburg Foundation »

As founding President and CEO of the Gettysburg Foundation, Robert Wilburn took the vision for a new Gettysburg experience from the ground up. Partnering with the National Park Service, this Foundation designed, funded and built and now operates a new $103 million Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park. This partnership is considered a model within government and non-profit communities and is unique among National Park Service partners for the degree of management afforded the partner.

Dr. Wilburn worked with the board chair to recruit a board, a historic advisory team of national stature, and advisory teams to assess architect and exhibit design proposals for the new facility. Thanks to $125 million in fundraising, the facility opened in spring 2008. The historic site currently attracts some 1.5 million visitors annually.

During Dr. Wilburn's tenure, a plan to conserve the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting was greatly expanded. To ensure the best possible visitor experience, the Foundation committed to raising significantly more funds to rehabilitate the 124 year-old painting, restore missing pieces, add a long-lost skyline and three-dimensional diorama and return the painting, as closely as possible, to its original appearance. The effort helped make the visitor experience much like what it was in the late 19th century, when veterans were said to have wept upon viewing it. The New York Times called the restoration “stunning.” [close]

Indiana University of Pennsylvania »

As President of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, one of the first decisions confronting Dr. Wilburn was the fate of John Sutton Hall. The century-old structure was scheduled for demolition. The state insisted that funding for a new library was contingent on the razing of the historic structure. Dr. Wilburn moved his young family into the old—and then-vacant—building. The move gave those supporting the preservation of the old building and those in favor of its demolition an opportunity to talk. The result was the first private fundraising campaign in the university's history. The campaign preserved John Sutton Hall, the building that was—and remains today—the heart of the campus. [close]
